coaching success

The fire burns in you.

You’ve seen others do it, so you know you can do it too.

Then a fair question is, “How does coaching success happen?”

A suggestion, start by developing YOUR definition of “success.”

Spend time on it. Get input from peers, supervisors. Then make an authetic defintion that is measurable, and meaningful.

Follow that up by identifying the functions vital to meeting that defintion. These are the critical things that MUST happen. Don’t go deeper than three. (More on why only three later.)

Then commit to making those three vital functions a reality. Everything else is not “secondary”. Everything else, coaching-wise, does NOT exist.

That’s how coaching success happens.

Here’s an example:

  • Step 1: Imagine you define success as “winning your conference championship.”
  • Step 2: Then you identify that the three vital functions that must happen are (a) recruit top athletes, (b) train those athletes for success, and (c) retain those athletes.
  • Step 3: Then you pursue those vital functions to the exclusion of all else (i.e., delegating your other coaching tasks)

Can you do these steps for coaching success?

You most certainly can do Step 1.

Possibly you can do Step 2.

It is doubtful you can do Step 3 (but critical you do as best you can).

Success rarely just happens. It takes thought, investment and the ability to subtract, say “No,” and delegate.
